Appreciation to ISSER and GSS for support in refining indicators on the status of women’s land, property and natural resource rights

One of the main recommendations from the March 2025 National Forum on the Status of Women’s Land, Property and Natural Resource Rights was to seek support from research institutions to review and validate the set of indicators stakeholders agreed should be tracked. Following the forum, bilateral engagements were held with representatives of the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) and the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) to seek their support. We are grateful to GSS and ISSER for willingly giving off their time and office facilities to have discussions on the indicators. This has been going on for since April 2025 following the forum. In all, a set of xxxx indicators under the four main categories (Norms and Attitudes. Roles and Responsibilities, Decision-Making and Power Dynamics, Women’s Access, Control, and Benefits in Land, Property and Natural Resources)

have been thoroughly discussed, defined, re-stated and refined.

On 24th June 2025, we a final review meeting at which the set of indicators were finalized. These indicators will form the basis for a national baseline data collection to determine the current situation on each of the indicators. This will be the basis for tracking progress and inform policy advocacy, awareness raising, training, capacity strengthening and other interventions.

The work at hand is enormous. However, this collaborative process with GSS and ISSER represents a step towards establishing a national framework for tracking and reporting on the status of women’s land, property and natural resource rights.  We look forward to deepening our partnerships around this work in Ghana. Stay tuned for more updates as we collectively work to improve the status of women’s land, property and natural resource rights.
