From Policy to Impact: Why Sustainable Local Action Requires More Than One-Off Engagements

Yeboahkrom is about 220 kilometers from Accra, with a population of over 300 people. All households in this community are engaged in cocoa farming with each household operating on an average of 2 hectares of cocoa farm. In addition to the cocoa farming activities, each household maintains a food crop farm and a few livestock that support the household nutritional needs. They practice shifting cultivation for their food cropping.

According to the local chief of the community, the total land area under the jurisdiction of the Yeboahkrom community is about 700 hectares, out of which each household has been granted the areas they have developed their farms. The rest of the land is still forest with rich minerals and other natural resources.

The people of Yeboahkrom have no electricity. They depend on firewood for their cooking and heating. They draw water for drinking and household uses from streams in the forest.

Yeboahkrom has seen its own share of the impacts of climate change. Unfortunately, despite their heavy dependence on the land, forest and landed resources for their daily survival, they have very limited exposure to the growing body of knowledge, policies and global/national discussions on climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.

We started engaging the community in 2018 to introduce them to sustainable land management practices, the contribution of land tenure security to climate action and environmental protection. We are working with the local chief and farmers to get each household educated and their land rights documented.

We had massive buy-in from all the stakeholders. But looking at the pictures, you can imagine how much efforts was needed to bring the local people to the point where they appreciated the concepts and committed themselves to the right actions.

Macro level results may be fanciful and catchy, but here at COLANDEF, we also keep our focus on the micro level results because we know that it is at that level where results emanate from.

Together with our partners, we are making a lasting impact in our beneficiary communities. Join us to do more to end land tenure insecurity and create a future where land rights are secure for all.
