Progress in Ghana’s Land Act Implementation Sees Collaborative Push for Regulatory Development
Efforts to realize the full potential of Ghana’s Land Act, 2020 (Act 1036), have taken a significant step forward with the continued development of key Regulations to support the Act’s enforcement. Spearheaded by the Lands Commission in close partnership with the Land Sector Multi-Stakeholder Platform (LSMSP), these Regulations are set to offer clarity and concrete steps for the practical application of the Act.
In a bid to ensure that all voices are heard, the LSMSP has taken a collaborative and inclusive approach to consultations, facilitating the participation of diverse stakeholders. Over 30 consultation sessions have brought together representatives from various sectors—including the private sector, media, traditional authorities, women’s groups, farmer cooperatives, civil society organizations, professional bodies, and government agencies—spanning communities across the country. This engagement aims to create a holistic regulatory framework that reflects the needs and perspectives of a broad cross-section of Ghanaian society.
The Coalition of Land and Development (COLANDEF), a civil society leader in land-related advocacy, has played an active role in this process. As part of the LSMSP Coordinating Committee, COLANDEF has committed to promoting transparency, accountability, inclusion, and effective information sharing. Its contributions have particularly focused on amplifying the voices of agricultural land users, local communities, women, and other marginalized groups.
This collaborative approach brings us closer to achieving a land policy framework that not only empowers agricultural stakeholders but also lays the groundwork for sustainable development across Ghana.
As Ghana moves closer to realizing the promise of the Land Act, the partnership-driven approach exemplified by LSMSP and the Lands Commission showcases a commitment to creating policies that align with the country’s vision of inclusive and sustainable land governance.
